STUDY SKILLS

Text: How to Improve Your Study Skills, 2nd edition, by Marcia Coman and Kathy Heavers

We provide instruction in Study Skills during the Latin 1 time segment in order to build a foundation for good study techniques for all of our first-year students. This class is designed to help the beginning middle school student to identify his/her own specific learning style, so he/she studies smarter, not harder! We will discuss study environment, sequence, and budgeting/scheduling study time as a priority. We will examine and practice a variety of study and note-taking techniques. We will also explore memory and test-taking strategies, as well as strategies for reducing test anxiety. We will also learn and practice techniques for improving understanding and practice skills for skimming and scanning.

Read-Aloud Time (After Lunch)

We will read through a variety of historical fiction novels as we progress through the eras we are studying each year in our history rotation. In this way, we hope to bolster and supplement our understanding of each period of history we are studying.
